P.S. re: distemper - fasting isn't required but most dogs in early stages are vommiting and won't eat regardless. I give a pill I'm forgetting its name to protect the stomach. If dog throwing up to the point it can't keep pills down I have vet insert a port thru which I can give in liquid form along with antibiotics. Also years back in Miami many of us were using a poultry vaccine that helped initially if given at first onset of disease called the New Castle vaccine. It didn't help when administered in the disease's later stages. It was being used off label with success in Europe somewhere which is where vets here had heard about it and were willing to try it. Many who dealt with rescues tried keeping it in stock but it expired if opened and not used within short amount of time so it wasn't cost effective for vet. No idea how easy/hard it is to order and obtain on short notice and if not given early its efficacy isn't worth trying it. Also since off label not all vets willing to even try it. Amazes me how western vets abhor holistic veterinary medicine same as medical doctors abhor chiropracters. A combined approach utilizing the best of both is what I support.
