Oh, Dan, what a heartbreaker.
It makes me wonder: how many dogs are holding cancer at bay, but just barely? My guess would be many, especially those past middle age. A tweak to throw the immune system off, be that Apoquel or (worse) a vaccination, and the cancer is no longer in check.
We know stress in general can do this. I think your sad story says even more: the more the immune system is part of the target of a drug, the more risk we're taking on for our animal.
