Hey Arthur, gelsemium was only an early thought, as it has been a very useful genus epidemicus in past flu epidemics. As more cases emerged and Dr. Pitcairn dove deeper with actual symptoms, he realized nux vomica was the better remedy. The important thing is: this was then borne out by many people who reported symptoms of COVID-19, took nux vomica, and got better, so it was verified. Remember, homeopathy is all about tracking the HOW of the illness: how do people suffer it? When we amass lots of symptoms common to many sufferers, we get a clearer understanding of the genus epidemicus remedy. This is not a "gelsemium illness," based on how people are reporting their symptoms.
