This is a common area that needs education, Karin. You have rights via the Compendium of Animal Rabies. Six months quarantine is if your animal is bitten by a presumably rabid animal. It can be done at home, in some cases. Ten days is the quarantine if your animals bites a person and the vaccination status does not matter any longer. Some will allow this at home as well.
It's far better to learn all you can here than to act out of fear. Which rabies has plenty of as it is, most of it unnecessary.
